Gernot Rohr drops a popular striker as he releases final 23 man squad for 2019 AFCON

The Super Eagles of Nigeria Coach, Gernot Rohr has announced his 23 man squad for the 2019 African Cup of Nations tournament and has dropped two players from the 25 man squad he announced in April.

Leicester City forward, Kelechi Iheanacho was dropped from the squad list and it is believed that it is because he had a poor season performance for his club through out the 2018/2019 season in English Premier League.

Another player who was dropped from the squad is Semi Ajayi.

Though Gernot Rohr is yet to announce who will be his first choice goalkeeper, it is understood that the battle for the number 1 spot will be between Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Daniel Akpeyi because of their fine performance at their club level last season.

Among the defenders called, it is expected that Ola Aina and Abdullahi Shehu will fit into the left and right full back respectively while Kenneth Omeruo, Leon Balogun and William Ekong will battle for the center back roles. Other defenders invited are Jamilu Collins and Chidozie Awaziem.

Rohr also called five midfielders who will battle for a place in a three/four man midfield which include national team captain Mikel Obi, Wilfred Ndidi, John Ogu, Oghenekaro Etebo and Asernal’s Alex Iwobi.

Gernot Rohr has invited Eight forwards which includes first timers such as Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze, Samuel Kalu and Paul Onuachu who all had a brilliant season for their respective clubs.

Other forwards called are old timers such as Odion Ighalo, Ahmed Musa, Moses Simon and Henry Onyekuru.
