The National leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Governor of Lagos State, Senatator Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the current Senate President of the upper chamber of the 8th National Assembly and former Governor of Kwara State, Senator Bukola Abubakar Saraki have entered into war of words over the allegations by Bola Tinubu that both Saraki and Yakubu Dogara (Speaker of the House of Representative) delayed and masterminded the padding of Nigeria’s budget that would have improved the state of the country .
It would be recalled that Saraki and Dogara went against the endorsement of the party on the leadership of the eight national assembly by becoming the Senate President and Speaker Speakers of the House of Representative respectively which did not go too well for Bola Tinubu and other party leaders. The final blow was done when both leaders decamped to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party in 2018.
Tinubu in his statement said “Saraki and Dogara masterminded the slashing of funds intended to prosper projects that would have benefitted the average person. Hence, the APC should do all we can to prevent a repeat of their malign control of the National Assembly.” He said.
Reacting to the allegations, Senator Saraki through the Special Adviser on media and publicity to the Senate President, Yusuph Olaniyunu said the vicious attack of Bola Tinibu on him is an indication that he is ensnared by his inability not to influence the leadership of the ninth assembly. He went further to list out milestone achievements of the eight assembly and important bills passed that will benefit every average Nigerian.
“The 8th NASS didn’t delay passage of any budget for 6months. Buhari’s MDAs did by refusal to defend their budgets. We had to write the president to compel his ministries and MDAs to come defend their budgets.”
“The passage of the UBEC Act (amendment) Bill was praised by Pakistani child education campaigner and youngest Nobel Laureate, Yousafzai Malala.”
“Nigeria Railways Authority Bill, Company and Allied Matters Act (amendment) Bill, Secured Credit Transactions Act, Whistleblowers Protection Bill, constitution amendment bills, Discrimination Against Persons With Disability Bill, Electronic Transaction Bill”.
“One of the bills, the Money Laundering Prevention and Prohibition Act (amendment) Bill was withdrawn by Buhari following disagreement between the Attorney General and the Chairman of EFCC. We had to save Nigeria from great consequences in this matter.”
“Also, the Nigerian Police leadership have praised the Senate for passing the Police Reforms Bill and the Police Trust Fund Bill.”
“Of course, all these initiatives will be ignored by a man who is still sulking because his vow in 2015 that Saraki and Dogara will never lead the National Assembly did not materialize.” Saraki said.
